Wednesday March 8, 2006 - New Orleans Narratives website is up.
I launched a mini-site (mini-mi abuelo, hah!!). No really, I put up a site that I hope to grow with narratives produced by others. Feel free to email me about this. Check it out!

Radio Documentary - I'm Home...

I am back in New Orleans after spending many weeks in Virginia with my generous Mom and my lovely girlfriend. Today was my first time on the air with WWOZ who have temporarily relocated to Baton Rouge's LBP building. As the show started, I was pretty much choked up with tears of joy and sadness which were on the verge of spilling onto the Behringer mixer. But I kept my cool.

I requested emails from listeners - the response was remarkable. It feels like the fog is finally lifting, the frost of commercial radio thawing, making way for some sort of rebirth. We can't give up!!! This ain't gonna be easy. There are a thousand obstacles and a lot to worry about, but consider the alternative (viewer discretion advised.)

There's so much more to say. I haven't updated this page for quite some time and I apologize to the few who may be reading this. But I'm back in the city we can't forget.

Sometime in September
As week 4 in exile approaches, another hurricane with a punch enters the gulf, lovely Rita. I do so much miss life in New Orleans (no particular order):
- iced coffee at the Rue de la Course
- real sausage (no really, I thought sausage was a readily available commodity until I entered Virginia.)
- Saturday night ceremonies with La Source Ancienne.
-WWOZ shows followed by a visit to Sallie Ann Glassman's Island of Salvation Botanica.
- the pace

My gig as Boom Operator for the independent film Local Color (directed by George Gallo) has wrapped. The film stars Ray Liotta, Diana Scarwid, Armin Mueller Stahl and Trevor Morgan - moving script, wonderful acting and low key (for the most part) set. Instead of a bottom line being the driving force behind this project, this film is being financed by people who believe in the project. I think the film will be a nice surprise for many.

Brian Eno has released a new CD that promises many joyful listenings. He has
returned to offer lyrics alongside his ambient musings. This is perhaps his best
work to date since he recorded with U2 in the mid 90s as The Passengers. Check
out AnotherdayonEarth.com. My only complaint is the cd is too short (46 minutes)
- The emotional range on this cd is far larger than most music in this genre.
"How Many Worlds" is a beautiful piece with a Beatle-like catchiness blended
with a velvet lushness. The extended bridge in "How Many Worlds" with its
strings and bells is a rich soundscape worthy of exploring and inhabiting.

On the other hand, Daniel Lanois' latest offering Belladonna is not nearly as
pleasing. Gone are the beautiful ballads with thoughtful lyrics that took precedence
on his first two CDs, Acadie and For the Beauty of Wynona. On Belladonna, Lanois
has turned to the pedal steel for his muse connection.
Granted, I will still continue to purchase his work as both a musician
and a producer. Hopefully, Belladonna is merely a phase he is passing through and
he planning a return to his soulful songwriting.

The music page featuring the work of George Ingmire is now up. These
recordings are mainly from the late 1990s when George lived in the French
Quarter. Following the death of his father in 1996, he embarked on a series
of recordings to turn his mind towards creative endeavors. 14 September is
one recording in particular that was written as a tribute/'release of sorrow'
to his father. The rawness of theserecordings speak to a great time in an attic
loft overlooking the Mississippi River. Picture: a new 4-track, many pints of
Guinness, and a curiousity with sounds.

RECENTLY ADDED LINK: KCRW, a radio station operating out of Los Angeles funded by the public (read last bastion of democracy.) My suggestion: when you're not listening to WWOZ , tune into
KCRW (and vice versa.) Keep a note pad by the computer.. There's a show every morning throughout
the work week "Morning Becomes Eclectic" hosted by Nic Harcourt.

Tonight at the HOB - Cheb Khaled (now known simply as Khaled) will perform with many, many special guests. This is arguably a once in a lifetime gig for the New Orleans community. Rai music in New Orleans. Khaled and friends showed up for an impromptu performance and interviews last night with the Goddess presiding and Freddie Blue engineering.
